Basement Waterproofing

Protect foundations, basement walls, slabs, and concrete joints against groundwater, hydrostatic pressure, seepage, and long-term dampness.

Application Overview

Basements and foundations remain in direct contact with surrounding soil and groundwater. Water can enter through porous concrete, cracks, construction joints, movement joints, and inadequately protected foundation walls.

Once the structure is completed, below-ground waterproofing can be difficult and expensive to repair. Siegelt provides a pre-applied foundation membrane and specialised joint-sealing products that protect the structure before water ingress begins.

Groundwater Ingress

Groundwater can penetrate foundation walls and slabs through cracks, joints, and porous concrete, causing persistent internal dampness.

Common Waterproofing Challenges

Hydrostatic Pressure

Rising groundwater creates continuous pressure against below-ground structures, challenging weak membranes, terminations, and poorly sealed construction details.

Construction Joints

Joints between concrete pours frequently permit water migration unless protected using positioned hydrophilic or flexible sealing systems.

Service Penetrations

Utility pipes and service entries interrupt foundation waterproofing, creating concentrated leakage risks around inadequately sealed penetration points.

Foundation Movement

Settlement, thermal change, and structural movement can strain waterproofing layers, opening cracks or separating weakly bonded areas.

Vapour and Dampness

Moisture vapour and concealed seepage encourage mould, odour, surface damage, and unhealthy conditions within occupied basement spaces.

Recommended Siegelt Waterproofing System

1

Prepare the Foundation

Ensure the base is stable, level, clean, and free from sharp projections or standing water.

2

Install the Membrane

Apply Foundation Membrane – FPO beneath slabs and against below-ground concrete walls.

3

Seal Concrete Joints

Install Hydrophilic Swell Bar within construction joints to prevent water migration between concrete pours.

4

Protect Movement Joints

Apply Expansion Joint Tape across movement and connection joints requiring flexible waterproof protection.

Product Recommendations

Foundation Membrane – FPO

A flexible FPO membrane that bonds with freshly poured concrete and protects basement structures against groundwater ingress.

Hydrophilic Swell Bar – TPE

A water-reactive profile that expands within concrete joints to seal gaps and prevent groundwater migration.

Expansion Joint Tape

A flexible FPO tape designed to maintain a watertight seal across joints exposed to structural movement and demanding conditions.
